They drift through forests, cling to the eaves of cottages, and nest in the hollows of ancient oaks. Each one carries a different facet of magic—flame, frost, growth, lightning, healing—depending on the element it was born under. The Yosei Scout is defined less by its elemental gift than by its temperament: restless, curious, and fiercely loyal once a bond is formed.

Scouts are the eyes and ears of their colonies. When a new path opens after a storm, or a dangerous creature stirs in the deep woods, it is a Scout that discovers the change first and races back to warn the others. They are small enough to slip under a door, fast enough to outrun a hawk, and clever enough to remember every turn. Villagers in Ni no Kuni often leave a small offering of honey or a single berry at the edge of the road, hoping a Scout will notice and, in gratitude, point the way to something useful.

When a human mage befriends a Yosei Scout, the bond deepens into something more than friendship. The rain had stopped an hour ago, but the forest still wept. Oliver squatted at the crossroads, his boots squelching in the mud, and tried to remember which way the old miller had said the bridge was. Up the hill. Down the hill. Both, maybe. Neither, certainly.

A tiny shape detached itself from a dripping fern frond and hovered at eye level—barely bigger than a walnut, with wings that shimmered like oil on water and a pair of enormous, knowing eyes. It tilted its head, regarded him with what could only be called impatience, then zipped forward and circled the crooked signpost twice before darting up the left-hand path.

Oliver blinked. Then he followed.

The Scout did not wait. It was already gone, a faint glint weaving between the trunks, occasionally pausing to check whether he was still there. He was. He was always still there. And after twenty minutes of muddy, root-tangled climbing, the bridge appeared ahead of him, dry and sturdy and exactly where the little creature had promised. He never did learn its name. It didn't seem to care. It was already scouting the next ridge.
