A small, round creature no bigger than a plum had rolled out from the undergrowth, its moss-green hide dusted with fine clay. It blinked two wide, dark eyes at him, tilted its head, and then—without a word—pressed its tiny palm flat against the creek bank. The water stilled. The pebbles rearranged themselves into a neat, dry path across the shallows.
